Sumatra (October 2020): Covid virus throws Forest Edge Communities into poverty, due to Tourism Collapse.
The biggest threat is the selling out of community-owned forests to large international palm oil industries. The short term profit leads to long-term poverty and loss of community. Other impacts include increased poaching of flora and fauna by locals.
Solutions include hiring locals to protect forests via elephant patrols and educating them on growing sustainable crops, while providing an avenue to ship the harvest to markets.
