Borneo: Only 1,500 elephants are estimated to remain in the wild in Borneo. The majority remain in Sabah - a rapidly developing region in the north, where road development is rapidly bifurcating the forests. A long-term radio collaring study (see attached) has determined that elephants avoid urban areas, purposely avoiding humans and their doings. They range between tree plantations and forests. Their preferred travel corridors is along ridgelines. Most elephant deaths are do to farmers poisoning and poaching for ivory.

It is essential that these elephant corridors remain intact and untouched by any future developments. Additional GPS radio collaring, such as this study, should be conducted.
