Elephants of Bangladesh: Locally "influential people" are stealing elephant habitat!
Elephants of Bangladesh: Locally "influential people" are stealing elephant habitat! They are causing more destruction within Cox's Bazaar than is the refugee crisis! Rohingya refugees have been violently forced out of Myanmar and have settled within the most important elephant habitat left in Bangladesh. Rohingya Refugees are occupying anywhere from 1,500 to 5,665 hectares, and in this same time period, "influential persons" have stolen 1,800 additional hectares!
There are only between 196 and 268 elephants remaining in Bangladesh. They are critically endangered and only live in the Southwest portion of the country. Nearly one hundred of the population travel internationally - between Bangladesh and neighboring Myanmar or India.
To preserve these few remaining elephants, authorities must take back the land that has been stolen by greedy local "influential people." While the refugees, without a safe home country to return too, should be moved into another area, outside the elephant habitat. They should be most particularly removed from elephant corridors!
