Elephant Radio Collaring, Sri Lanka

Film from SavingGanesh.org: Many of our recent posts have discussed the problems with translocating elephants (please view links below). This SavingGanesh.org videoblog is proof that the Veterinarians and Rangers of Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation must have the most dangerous job in the world!

To radio collar a member of a large herd, they must track the herd within a dense jungle, single out a mature female and dart her. All the while, the other 20 to 30 herd members are pissed off. The rangers must keep them scattered away while the thirty minute task of collaring commences. They then give an antidote to the collared elephant and swiftly exit the area. It is crazy risky. The rangers honestly do it for their love of nature, the elephants and their fellow rangers. It's like a military operation - the camaraderie is palpable. Hero Rangers.https://youtu.be/lkqN5D58DzA
